Why the Grand Magal Matters

Spiritual Significance

Pilgrims filling the esplanade of Touba’s Great Mosque at sunrise, Grand Magal

The Grand Magal commemorates Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba’s safe return from exile in 1902 and honours his disciple Cheikh Ibra Fall’s work-as-prayer ethic. Millions gather to recite zikr, study Bamba’s poetry and renew vows of humility, charity and unity.

Economic Impact

More than four million pilgrims transform Touba into a vibrant pop-up city. Faith-driven commerce—food stalls, transport fleets and artisan markets—injects an estimated US $300 million+ into Senegal’s economy, funding schools, clinics and water projects long after the crowds disperse.

2025 Schedule Highlights (Provisional)

  • 05 : 00 AM — Dawn prayers and opening zikr circle on the esplanade
  • 10 : 00 AM — Sermon on “Khidma & Teranga” by Grand Marabout
  • 12 : 30 PM — Communal meal (thiéboudienne) served by volunteer dahiras
  • 03 : 00 PM — Panel: “Faith-Driven Economics” (Touba Conference Hall)
  • 08 : 00 PM — Nightly zikr & poetry recital inside the Great Mosque
